St Albans City and District Council

Overview

Welcome to St Albans.

Our approach is positive and entrepreneurial. We take great pride in our place and supporting the people that make up our thriving community. We know our residents, visitors and businesses share this pride. That’s why we want to make sure our vibrant city, towns and villages continue to be a great place to live, work and visit.

We're an award-winning council serving around 147,000 people and one of the biggest employers in our district. We work hard to be at the forefront of new thinking locally, regionally and nationally.

There are many different roles and opportunities in our different departments and their service areas. Our services work together as one team to strengthen our customer focus. Find out more about each department here.

We’re transforming how we work so that we are fit for the future. This means being able to respond flexibly and adapt quickly. We’ll achieve this by making the most of the latest digital technology, developing our workforce so that we have the right skills in place and harnessing the capacity of our partners.

We’re a lean operation of around 450 staff, but we trust each other to care, be confident and work together to achieve the best for our customers. Join our team, make a difference and let St Albans work for you!

Why work with us?

We’re rapidly evolving and ready to embrace new ideas. That’s why we encourage our people to find innovative ways of doing things. Working here means being positive about change and working flexibly. Our values and behaviours support this and make us unique.

This is a place where you’ll get to challenge the status quo and we’ll encourage you to be passionate about coming up with innovate ideas to better serve our community. We put customer needs at the centre of designing effective solutions and have the confidence to try out new ideas.

Our people need to work flexibly. There are a wide range of different working patterns - not just Monday to Friday, 9 to 5 - and remote working, working from home and hot-desking. 80% of our staff have some sort of flexible working arrangement, helping you to build the perfect work-life balance.

Working together is the St Albans way and we want to encourage a culture that puts residents and other customers at the heart of what we do.  We expect our staff to trust each other to care and be confident. And this is reflected in our Values and Behaviours.

We value and celebrate the diversity that exists within our community and wish to employ a wide variety of people. Whatever your background, you’ll find St Albans City and District Council a welcoming place where you can learn, develop and achieve your very best.

We want St Albans to work for you and for you to love working here. Rewarding our people for the valuable work they do helps us attract and retain the very best talent. That’s why we offer the things that matter to them including:

  • Support for career development

Apprenticeship, Graduate and Work Experience Programmes

Apprenticeships

You get to build your skills and knowledge through on-the-job training and usually some classroom learning. On completion, you’ve gained a nationally recognised qualification and often the opportunity to apply for a full-time job. Our apprenticeships cover a wide range of roles in areas such as:

  • Business and administration
  • Planning
  • Customer service
  • IT
  • Finance
  • Human Resources

Summer Internships

This is a great way to gain practical work experience of working in local government and see if it is the career for you.  We offer a number of placements each summer, working within one of our departments.

You will work with us on a fixed term three-month contract and your placement will provide an opportunity to:

  • Increase your confidence, skills and knowledge
  • Improve your understanding of the sector
  • Gain an insight into the way the council operates and the challenges we face
  • Build your network of work colleagues

If you have recently graduated or are entering your final year at university this would be an ideal opportunity to put your knowledge into practice in a busy and challenging work environment.

Graduate Opportunities

Across the organisation we have a wide range of roles available to graduates who want to start their career in local government. These can offer you a first step on your chosen career path or perhaps a 12-month placement which gives you the opportunity to gain experience and consider your options.

Look out for our graduate, apprenticeship, internship and other career opportunities on this website or sign up for email alerts to make sure you don’t miss out next time we are recruiting.
