Hertfordshire Opportunity Pledge

MAKE THE PLEDGE

In signing up to the pledge you are committing to provide opportunities for people to work, earn a wage and gain valuable qualifications and experience. We’re asking you to sign up and pledge your support to help a diverse range of people prepare for and enter the world of work.

Make the pledge, and commit to offer or join one or more of the following:

OFFER AN APPRENTICESHIP

Apprenticeships give businesses the chance to nurture their own talent, reduce training costs, and develop a workforce with the specialist skills the business needs.

BACK THE FUTURE

The Back the Future campaign is a collective of employers, apprenticeship training providers and intermediaries, who believe employers should be backing the UK’s talent pipeline and are committed to addressing social mobility issues, ensuring individuals are not put off applying for apprenticeships because pay is too low.

OFFER A TRAINEESHIP

Traineeships are a skills development programme that include a minimum of 70 hours work experience. They give young people aged 16-24 the experience to progress into employment or apprenticeships. Trainees can form the beginning of an employer’s talent pipeline and provide an opportunity for an employer to get to know and work with young people prior to recruiting apprentices.

OFFER WORK EXPERIENCE

Offering those aged 16-24 a work experience placement is a great way of attracting a younger workforce to your company. A carefully thought-out work experience programme, delivered over a period of time, where young people can work on real projects means they get a true picture of what it is like to work in your industry.

BECOME AN ENTERPRISE ADVISER FOR THE CAREERS AND ENTERPRISE COMPANY

Enterprise Advisers are local business leaders who volunteer to support schools with their careers programmes on a strategic level. Find out more about the work of the Careers and Enterprise Company and how businesses can be involved here.

BECOME A DISABILITY CONFIDENT EMPLOYER

Disability Confident organisations play a leading role in changing attitudes for the better. They change behaviour and cultures in their own businesses, networks and communities, and reap the benefits of inclusive recruitment practices. This multi-level scheme helps employers recruit and retain great people, draw from the widest possible pool of talent and secure high-quality staff who are skilled, loyal and hard working.

WIDEN YOUR TALENT POOL THROUGH SCHEMES THAT REACH UNDER-REPRESENTED GROUPS

HOP INTO YOUR FUTURE is a programme to support disadvantaged and under-represented young people aged 16-24 in Hertfordshire. With support and mentoring training from a specialist team, the employer is matched with a young person who will have four 3-hour work taster sessions with the employer. This can lead to a 70-hour traineeship and possibly an apprenticeship.

SUPPORTED INTERNSHIPS are structured programmes managed by our Further Education colleges in Hertfordshire to support young people aged 16-24 with a statement of special educational need or an Education, Health & Care Plan (EHCP) who want to move into employment and need extra support to do so.

PROJECT POSITIVE supports Hertfordshire’s care experienced young people to access employment through apprenticeships. The scheme provides support to the employer, the young person, and the training provider throughout the process.

INCLUSIVE EMPLOYMENT PROJECT helps unemployed adults aged 18+ with learning and physical disabilities, mental health issues, sensory needs and neurodiversity into employment, education or training.

HERTFORDSHIRE OPPORTUNITIES PORTAL

By pledging your support to young people in Herts, your organisation will be able to showcase your career programmes on HOP’s Employer Spotlight. HOP is used by our schools, colleges and training providers to highlight to their students the variety of employment opportunities across Hertfordshire – a great chance for your organisation to reach a wide pool of talent.
