Colleges Week 2019

Love Our Colleges Campaign, an opportunity to highlight the brilliant work that goes on in colleges, the inspiring staff and why the government need to invest.

This week is colleges week (14th-18th October) and HOP wants to celebrate Hertfordshire's colleges and highlight why it is so important that the further education (FE) sector receives urgent investment from Government.

The Love Our Colleges Campaign is a partnership between the Association of Colleges (AoC), National Union of Students (NUS), Association of College and School Leaders (ACSL), University and Colleges Union (UCU), Unison, GMB, TUC, and the National Education Union (NEU).

The campaign began in September 2018 and has shown progress, here are some of their highlights so far:

  • 31st August 2019 - Government announcement £400 million FE funding
  • 19th July 2019 - Education Select Committee have released a report pushing Government to create a ten-year plan, with the correct levels of funding for colleges and schools

However lots more needs to be done. Colleges have a huge impact on millions of lives each year, providing jobs, opportunities and another path for people who may not go down the University route. Despite this, they are the only part of the education system that has been subject to a decade of cuts.

This has led to economic challenges, with staff income dropping a quarter since 2009 leading to school teachers earning around £7,000 more on average. There are also a shortage in skills, especially in STEM related sectors which will, if not addressed have an effect on the UK economy.
