Leading a Mentally Healthy Workplace

About the Programme: Skills Bootcamps are flexible training courses for adults, designed to help individuals develop in-demand skills that address the evolving needs of today’s workplaces. They are a maximum of 16 weeks.  They are part of the UK Government's Lifetime Skills Guarantee, which aims to ensure employees have access to continuous professional development and the tools necessary to thrive in their roles.

Our Leading a Mentally Healthy Workplace Skills Bootcamp is a targeted, high-impact programme delivered over 12-14 weeks. It is specifically designed to address the mental health needs and leadership challenges faced by organisations in Hertfordshire. The programme is aimed at HR professionals, managers, leaders, and those overseeing mental health within their teams.  It can also benefit employees who aspire to progress and take on a leadership role in managing mental health within their organisation.

What the Bootcamp Offers: Participants will engage in a range of training modules designed to support and enhance leadership and management skills, including:

  • Understanding Mental Health in the Workplace
  • Mental Health First Aid (leading to accredited MH First Aider status)
  • Creating a Positive Workplace Culture – fostering transparency, openness, and psychological safety
  • Skills to Support Mental Health:
    • Effective communication and managing difficult conversations
    • Handling absenteeism, presenteeism, and underperformance
    • Managing reasonable adjustments in compliance with legal requirements
    • Monitoring, reporting, and supporting team members
  • Effective Signposting – linking employees to internal and external mental health support resources
  • Developing an Organisational Mental Health Toolkit

The programme helps leaders and managers proactively identify and manage staff mental health concerns early, equipping them with the skills to intervene before issues escalate. This leads to a more engaged, present, and productive workforce. Additionally, managers will develop skills in coaching, mentoring, and managing mental health-related challenges within the legal framework, including providing reasonable adjustments.

We also cover sensitive yet important topics, such as managing situations where individuals may unintentionally or deliberately overstate mental health challenges to take time off work. Managers will be equipped with the skills to approach and handle these situations effectively, leading with both fairness and empathy.

Tailored Solutions for Your Organisation: We can also deliver a bespoke programme designed specifically for your organisation, addressing your unique challenges, and incorporating them into the training for maximum relevance and impact.

About the Programme:
Skills Bootcamps are flexible training courses for adults, designed to help individuals develop in-demand skills that address the evolving needs of today’s workplaces. They run for a maximum of 16 weeks and are part of the UK Government's Lifetime Skills Guarantee, which aims to ensure that employees have access to continuous professional development and the tools necessary to thrive in their roles.

The Mental Health Peer Support Worker Skills Bootcamp programme is delivered over 12 weeks. It is specifically designed to support people with lived experience of mental health challenges, whether they are currently employed and seeking career advancement, or unemployed and aiming to enter the mental health sector. The programme empowers participants to learn how to effectively support others facing similar challenges, drawing on their own experiences. It equips them with valuable skills to assist others in their recovery journeys, providing the guidance, resources, and networking opportunities necessary to navigate the job market and pursue meaningful employment opportunities in the mental health field.

What the Bootcamp Offers:
Participants will engage in a variety of training modules to enhance their skills and build on transferable abilities, including:

  • The Role of the Mental Health Support Worker
  • Effective Communication with Individuals, Colleagues, and Professionals
  • Building Effective and Trusting Relationships
  • Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion; Cultural Competence
  • Planning for, Conducting, and Ending a Peer Relationship
  • Trauma-Informed Practice
  • Motivational Coaching, Aspirations, and Goal Setting
  • Advocacy and Empowerment
  • Managing Self: Workload, Self-Care, and Safety
  • Career Options, Progression Routes, and Application Support

Additional Support:
At the start of the programme, we will discuss each individual's aspirations and goals on a one-to-one basis. Throughout the programme, participants will receive coaching calls to work on these personal goals, with pastoral support to ensure they achieve their end objectives—whether that is securing an interview for a job or taking on additional responsibilities in their current role.

Participants will also achieve a Level 3 Accredited Module: Understanding Mental Health, which adds valuable knowledge and skills to the programme.

Programme Benefits:
By attending this programme, participants will be able to:

  • Leverage their own lived experience to support others’ recovery
  • Network with professionals and peers in the mental health field to build a supportive community and explore career opportunities
  • Advance within their current role, pursue a new career path in mental health, or gain employment in the sector
  • Develop coaching skills to help others lead meaningful lives
  • Enhance communication techniques essential for supporting others
  • Deepen their understanding of mental health issues and effective strategies for support
  • Build confidence and empowerment in their ability to make a difference

The aim is to start the programme on 12th November, with sessions delivered remotely over 10-12 weeks, typically between 10am and 1pm. If the group expresses interest in meeting in person, we will consider arranging face-to-face sessions at a suitable venue.

This programme is aimed at those with lived experience of mental health. Although it is called a Mental Health Peer Support Worker programme, it can be adapted to meet individual needs, and participants are not required to become peer support workers as part of the end goal. The programme can be adapted to fit individual needs and career aspirations.

We will work with individuals at every stage to identify their needs, wishes, and preferences, and explore roles suitable for them. For example, they may want to pursue a job in finance, retail, etc. The skills developed as part of the peer support worker programme are transferable across different employment sectors, so we can adapt the programme to suit their needs and help them achieve their goals.

Please also see the attached Oliver McGowan brochure for details on the training we offer. Currently, we have an individual with autism joining this programme, and we have tailored it to support his goal of becoming a lived experience expert trainer for the Oliver McGowan training. While the core content and training will remain the same, we will adjust his initial coaching calls and training to align with his specific needs and developmental goals, demonstrating how we can adapt the programme to meet his initial goal.
