Skills Bootcamp: Production Assistant, September 2023
Training Provider: All Spring Media

Ollie Gomm always had an ambition to work in the creative industries, but like many, his journey into the world of film and television wasn’t a direct path. After completing his degree at the University of Hertfordshire, Ollie found himself working in various sectors, including sales and hospitality, while still holding on to his dream of breaking into the film and TV industry.

The highly competitive nature of this field meant Ollie needed not just passion, but specific skills, industry know-how, and crucial connections to progress. He was looking for an opportunity that would help him gain practical skills and expand his professional network, and that’s when he discovered the Skills Bootcamp for Production Assistants offered by All Spring Media.

Discovering the Skills Bootcamp
Ollie first came across the Production Assistant Bootcamp while searching for opportunities through Facebook networking groups. The course immediately caught his attention, as it was not only local but also partnered with Sky Studios Elstree, a well-known name in the industry. The fact that it was free and designed for aspiring professionals like him made it the perfect fit. "I applied without hesitation," Ollie recalls. "I was thrilled when I got accepted."

Skills Acquired
Over the course of the bootcamp, Ollie gained a wealth of new skills that helped him grow both professionally and personally. Some of the key areas he developed include:

  • Marketing and Self-Promotion: Ollie learned how to market himself effectively, including pitching his own ideas, a crucial skill in a competitive industry like film and television.
  • Set Etiquette: Understanding the dynamics on set, such as using radios for communication, was another valuable takeaway. Learning the ins and outs of set behaviour helped Ollie feel prepared for roles such as Production Assistant (PA).
  • Budgeting and Scheduling: The bootcamp also provided Ollie with practical knowledge of budgeting and scheduling, which are vital for production roles, particularly for aspiring PAs who need to manage multiple aspects of a shoot.
  • Proactivity and Networking: Perhaps most importantly, Ollie learned the value of being proactive—seeking out opportunities and building relationships with others in the industry. This mindset played a crucial role in his eventual success.

Progression and Success
Upon completing the bootcamp, Ollie’s journey didn’t stop there. He was added to the All Spring Media talent pool and included in a dedicated WhatsApp group that regularly shared job opportunities, industry events, and networking tips. Just a couple of months after completing the course, Ollie applied for a position as a Team Assistant at All Spring Media and successfully landed the role.

The team assistant position allowed Ollie to further develop his skills in a professional environment, and the support he received from All Spring Media didn’t end with the course. "Although my contract was initially short-term, I was offered an extension, which provided me with stability while still allowing me to take on freelance opportunities within the industry," Ollie explains. "I even had the chance to pitch my own ideas and contribute to future courses being developed by All Spring Media."

A few months later, Ollie secured his first High-End TV contract as a Base PA on Call the Midwife, Season 14, a major career milestone that wouldn’t have been possible without the training and connections he gained through the Skills Bootcamp.

Testimonial
Reflecting on his experience, Ollie says, "I knew I was in the right place from the first day of the course. The atmosphere was so positive, and the instructors shared so much knowledge. The connections I made, both with other learners and professionals, have been invaluable. Thanks to the ongoing support from All Spring Media, I’ve been able to secure exciting opportunities and work in a field I’m passionate about."

Inspiring Others
Ollie’s story is a testament to the real-world impact of Skills Bootcamps, not just in building technical knowledge but also in providing the confidence and support necessary to make strides in a competitive industry. His success demonstrates how these programs can open doors for aspiring professionals, and his journey continues to inspire others looking to break into film and television.

Through his hard work, Ollie has shown that with the right training and a proactive attitude, it’s possible to turn passion into a rewarding career.
