STEVENAGE - A NEW ERA

As the borough council to Britain’s first ‘new town’ we are proud to serve our residents and communities with a vision and a desire to progress and develop.  This is reflected in our award winning green spaces throughout the town and our ambitious plans for regeneration to make Stevenage an attractive place to live and work.

We have around 750 dedicated staff who deliver our services to our residents with professionalism, compassion and efficiency.  We are ambitious and forward thinking in our approach to what the council should be in the future.

The scale of ambition across Britain’s First New Town is unprecedented. A major £billion town centre regeneration programme is currently underway along with a £45 million refurbishment of council homes. At the same time there is significant investment across the town’s neighbourhoods to make lives better. All of this is being driven by a council with a co-operative commitment to working with its communities and driving a modern and agile approach to its work.

The Covid-19 pandemic has had a profound effect on Stevenage, as it has across towns and cities across the UK. As the town embarks on its recovery plan it does so attempting to ensure that no-one is left behind. The council has recently agreed an Inclusive Economy Charter and has also announced an Equalities Commission. The aim of both of these is to tackle issues of social exclusion and to ensure opportunities are created for everyone across the town. The local voluntary sector has also come together to work to secure resources to tackle the challenges ahead.

The next 12 months will be critical to the town’s recovery.

APPRENTICESHIP, GRADUATE AND WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAMMES

We are proud that our Apprentice and Graduate programmes result in a large number of individuals deciding to stay on once their placement has been completed.  The case studies from Jessica and Adam (below), plus numerous others working for the Council show that a career path can start from many different beginnings.

Adam Lucas, Housing Supply Coordinator, former Apprentice: "Apprenticeships are for all individuals. I chose to apply for my apprenticeship to change my career and it has been one of the best decisions that I have made. I have a role that can make changes in someone’s life. Being able to assist the community in a positive way makes my role very rewarding. If you have been considering a change and want something more rewarding and fulfilling, then have faith in your abilities and make the change."

Jessica Warren, Community Safety Officer, former Apprentice: I joined Stevenage Borough Council as an Anti-Social Behaviour Apprentice in January 2017. I completed my Apprenticeship in January 2017 and then became an Anti-Social Behaviour Assistant when my apprenticeship was completed, this was on a temporary contract.  I then went on to become an Anti-Social Behaviour Officer on a temporary contract. Then we when we went under a business unit review where I was lucky enough to be secured into the Community Safety Officer role I am currently in, the Anti-Social Behaviour Officers were ring fenced to the Community Safety Officer roles and my job became a permanent role.

My experience so far on my career pathway has all been positive. I am lucky enough to have a very supportive team who all want to see others thrive in their career and they have helped and supported me along the way. I shadowed other team members and received plenty of training to help me better understand my roles.

I am truly thankful for the team that I work with every day. They provide me endless amounts of support if it be that I need to talk through a case that its very stressful or things happening in my home life, the team are always there to provide a helping hand and a shoulder to cry on when needed. I have had amazing mentors and management who encouraged me to trust my instincts and own ability to know what the right thing to do is.  All they have done throughout my career is trusted me and reminded me to trust myself and this goes a long way when you feel that you should be doing more or be doing better. They regularly take the time to tell me how proud they are of me with how far I have come and how proud I should be of myself.
