HCC is looking at transformation being a key component of future plans, including how apprenticeships are at the forefront of our thinking to continuously improve.

Hertfordshire County Council’s 2017-21 Corporate Plan sets out the aspiration for the Council to continue promoting Hertfordshire as a County of Opportunity. The Council wants all Hertfordshire’s citizens to have the opportunity to be healthy and safe, to thrive, prosper and to take part in their communities.

My experience as an apprentice at Hertfordshire County Council has been very positive, having received all the support I needed from my line manager and my colleagues over the last year and a half. I was able to learn both on my course and in my role and I continue to learn accounting knowledge every day. My colleagues would always be understanding with my college workload and helped reduce the stress that came with it. I would fully recommend an apprenticeship with HCC!

Completing an apprenticeship at HCC opened up loads of opportunities for me and enabled me to meet people in all different teams. Throughout my apprenticeship I developed my confidence and gained a wide range of skills.

APPRENTICESHIPS AND WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAMMES

We offer apprenticeships ranging from Level 2 all the way to Level 7 masters. As we are such a diverse employer, these vary significantly depending on the service area and include Adult Careworker, Business Administration, HR, Finance, Legal, Procurement, Engineering, Children & Young People, Teaching and Leadership & Management.

We use apprenticeships as a “grow your own” process to vouch for the quality of training; invest in the person and link this to a career pathway. The Apprenticeship pathway attracts a more diverse workforce. We are embracing apprenticeships into our workforce and celebrating their successes and career succession, e.g. we held a Graduate Celebration Event hosted by our CEO, Politicians and AD HR.

HCC saw the introduction of the Apprenticeship Levy as an opportunity to maximise it for the benefit of skills / learning throughout the workforce and County, to address skill shortages and to be bold in the opportunities the levy brings. This vision aligns with Hertfordshire’s Skills Strategy; which HCC leads on with the LEP & DWP; by developing our future workforce, enhancing opportunities through lifelong learning and improves the skills of the existing workforce and the future labour market to sustain economic growth.

Apprenticeships are supported from all levels including our new Chief Executive, Directors, Politicians, Managers and staff.
