Living away from home for the first time can seem very daunting and it is really important to look after yourself mentally and physically.
Here are some tips on how to successfully live away from home:

  1. 1

There are a ton of new students who are all in a new environment away from their home comforts and old routines. So talk to people, you will be surprised how much better you will feel sharing your experience with someone likewise.

  2. 2

This might seem minor but familiarising yourself with home comforts should relax you. It’s a chance to make something unique that you can come back to everyday. Enjoy it, decorating should be fun!

  3. 3

Join a club or a society, this will provide a distraction as well as a chance to meet new like minded people. If you aren’t drawn to any go along to one your class or flat mates are going too.

  4. 4

Plan out your week, from the day you are going to go food shopping to the route you take to campus. This should help you feel more settled in your new environment.

  5. 5

Invite a flat mate to go and do washing together. You will all be new to it so take someone along and hopefully this will seem less daunting.

  6. 6

Sleep is extremely important, especially while studying. It can affect your concentration, mood and health. Make sure you are getting enough sleep, its all about balance!

  7. 7

We all love eating but it's also really important and again, can have major effects on your concentration, mood and health. Try and eat well, find easy recipes online that include some greens!

If you are living with a group of people you could have an evening where you all cook a meal together. This would be another fun way to socialise and talk to people similar about their experience living away from home.

  8. 8

Not just for the physical benefits but mentally too, you would be surprised how good you would feel after a jog or a bike ride. If you don’t like doing this alone then ask a flat mate or join a club.

  9. 9

This might be your first time managing money, especially a student loan so figuring out how much you can spend each month and on what will help you feel more in control.

  10. 10

You have a whole new town and campus to explore! Take a flat mate or go on your own and find out where a pharmacy is, the doctors, a bank, the local shops and some fun things like the cinema. Finding out what is surrounding you will help you relax and soon you will be noticing familiar places.

    Good luck!
