Generation Dacorum careers fair draws over 1,000 young people to discover local opportunities

Over 1,000 young people from all secondary schools in Dacorum attended Hertfordshire Careers Hub's latest Generation event which showcased the plethora of career opportunities available locally.

Generation Dacorum was organised by Hertfordshire Careers Hub, Connect Dacorum and Ruth George HR Consulting and took place last week at Shendish Manor hotel. This is the fourth Generation Dacorum event to be held since 2018, with the first providing the blueprint for other Generation events held across the county.

Generation Dacorum was sponsored by Ruth George HR Consulting, Aaron Services, Cablesheer, TP Fire and Security and Osborne. Students had the chance to meet and interact with 36 exhibitors, comprising local employers and training providers including Tesco, Hertfordshire Constabulary and B&M Care Homes.

Miles, a Year 11 student, said: “Before attending, I really didn’t have any ideas about my future career. I was able to talk to a construction company, Balfour Beatty, and a Finance business, Amberside Advisors, about the variety of different jobs that previously I didn’t know existed. This has definitely helped me consider how the A Levels I might want to do are linked to future career decisions. I’m really pleased that I was able to attend.”

Vicki Hawes, Chief People Officer at Amberside Advisors, said: “It’s always exciting to engage with young people who are looking at their future options - it's great to hear about their aspirations and be able to offer them guidance towards a rewarding career. I'm especially passionate about encouraging women to give a career in finance a try, so it was great to speak to many engaged teenagers, who showed immense potential and interest in the sector.”

Generation events are a significant part of Hertfordshire Careers Hub’s annual delivery plan, providing vital opportunities for students to engage with employers and helping to drive up career aspirations. The next Generation event is due to take place in Hertsmere on 15th November, followed by Welwyn Hatfield in February 2024, Broxbourne in March and Stevenage in May.
