How did the learner find out about the Skills Bootcamp?

Ed discovered the HBXL Skills Bootcamps while actively searching online for opportunities to re-train and build on his extensive construction experience. Having followed the rollout of subsidised Skills Bootcamps closely, he recognised HBXL’s practical, industry-led approach as a perfect fit for his next step.

Background: Experience, skills & ambitions

With nearly 20 years in the trade, Ed began his career as a Bench Joiner and Wood Machinist before running his own cabinet-making business for over a decade. He later worked as a specialist fabricator for galleries in London, using his design and technical skills on bespoke, high-end installations.

When the time came to re-focus his career, Ed wanted to build on his hands-on trade knowledge and move into a consultancy role, combining craftsmanship with digital design and business insight. His goal was to modernise his skill set, deepen his CAD expertise, and understand how accurate estimating and project planning could shape a more sustainable future in construction.

“I thought moving into consultancy would be a better use of my pre-existing skill sets — and the Bootcamp was the perfect route to make that happen.”

What new skills did he learn on the Skills Bootcamp?

During the course, Ed developed a stronger command of CAD for construction, gaining confidence in:

  • Producing accurate 2D drawings and measured layouts
  • Understanding the estimating process from end to end
  • Applying business modelling to construction projects
  • Integrating digital tools into real-world design and build work

He particularly enjoyed the hands-on, practical exercises, describing the structure as “perfect” and the online format as “ideal.”

“The practical exercises were great — I love the doing.”

Progression: What happened next?

The Skills Bootcamp experience gave Ed renewed confidence and direction. He has since:

  • Applied new estimating skills to secure work at fairer, more sustainable prices
  • Developed business models for a future consultancy venture
  • Enhanced his digital skillset, preparing for further Bootcamp training next year
  • Reconnected with the industry through a more strategic, professional lens

Ed credits the course with giving him a new sense of optimism and a realistic understanding of the business side of construction.

“When you train in the trades, business modelling is non-existent. The Bootcamp gave me a much more realistic estimating process — something every tradesperson needs.”

Advice to others

“Embrace the process, learn everything you can, and enjoy it — it’s a wonderful resource.”

Ed recommends the Skills Bootcamps to anyone looking to re-skill or diversify their career in construction.

“It gave me the confidence to seek new opportunities at a time when I was beginning to lose hope for a working future.”

Conclusion

Ed’s story demonstrates the wider social and economic impact of the HBXL Skills Bootcamps — helping experienced tradespeople retrain for new roles, build digital confidence, and remain active contributors to the construction sector. His journey reflects the programme’s core purpose: to empower individuals with the skills and confidence to thrive in a changing industry.
